Just a few months ago, Omar wasn't sure what his future would look like.
After years of struggling with mental health challenges, cycling through shelters, and facing uncertainty about where he would go next, he found himself at a crossroads. Today, Omar has something he once only hoped for: a place of his own to call home.
"Without Grandma's House of Hope, I'd probably still be bouncing from shelter to shelter or living on the streets," Omar says. "It was one of the steps I needed to get on the right track."
Omar came to Grandma's House of Hope after spending several years in shelter programs. Living with schizophrenia, he faced challenges maintaining stability and staying connected to the support he needed. When his stay at another shelter was coming to an end, a caseworker helped connect him with Grandma's House of Hope.
What stood out immediately was the structure.
"They've given me structure," Omar explains. "You're not just staying here. You follow a schedule, you have responsibilities, and it helps put you on the right track."
Each day included routines designed to build independence and prepare participants for long-term success. From chores and community service to job readiness and personal development, the program helped Omar create habits that would serve him beyond the shelter.
"The structure teaches you the things you need when you're out on your own," he says. "Having a routine is really important."
Beyond the daily schedule, Omar found something else that made a difference: people who genuinely cared.
His case manager, Eileen, along with team members Bernard, Efrain, Woody, and James, encouraged him to keep moving forward.
"They made me feel like I wanted to do better for myself," Omar says. "They encouraged me and supported me."
Unlike larger shelters he had experienced in the past, Grandma's House of Hope felt personal.
"It feels like a home," he says. "You have a kitchen, a dining room, and you're living with a smaller group of people. Everyone was respectful, and it was a really calm environment."
That sense of community helped Omar focus on his goals. With support from the housing team, he navigated challenges with his housing paperwork and ultimately secured something he had worked hard to achieve: his own apartment.
"Grandma's House of Hope helped me accomplish my dream of having my own place," he says.
Today, Omar continues building his future. He participates in a workforce apprenticeship program, pursues employment opportunities, and maintains a daily routine focused on personal growth, self-care, and strengthening his faith.
His goal is simple but meaningful.
"I want a career, a stable job, and to be able to pay my rent and be a productive member of society."
Omar also hopes to give back to others one day.
"I want to make a difference in the community, just like the people at Grandma's House of Hope made a difference for me."
When asked what he would tell someone who is struggling and considering seeking help, Omar doesn't hesitate.
"Grandma's House of Hope offers a great support system. They treat you with respect and make you feel like part of the family."
For supporters and volunteers, he has a message as well:
"It makes a difference. Everything you do matters. Knowing what I've been through and what others are going through, I can tell you that your support changes lives."
Today, Omar's story is one of hope, perseverance, and new beginnings—a reminder that with the right support, stability is possible and a brighter future can become reality.
